The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

Collaboration is an expectation, not just a cliché at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, NC. In fact, this public cancer center prides itself on serving the North Carolina community and beyond. The Cancer Center provides an infrastructure and culture of cooperation among some of the most exceptional physicians and scientists in the country to investigate and improve the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer. With research that spans the spectrum from the laboratory to the bedside to the community, UNC Lineberger faculty work to understand the causes of cancer at the genetic and environmental levels, to conduct groundbreaking laboratory research, and to translate findings into pioneering and innovative clinical trials.

The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and across the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach. The N.C. Cancer Hospital - part of UNC Health Care - is the cancer center's clinical home.  This mission is fueled by collaboration across the population, basic and clinical sciences. UNC Lineberger's  members hail from more than 40 departments from across the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including the Gillings School of Global Public Healththe Eshelman School of Pharmacythe School of Medicinethe School of Dentistry and the College of Arts and Sciences .

With support from the state of North Carolina for the construction of the N.C. Cancer Hospital and through the University Cancer Research Fund, UNC Lineberger faculty treat cancer patients, conduct research into the causes of cancer and search for new treatments, develop and direct statewide programs in cancer prevention, and train future physicians, nurses, scientists and public health professionals.

The power of one of the nation's top public universities, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, means that at UNC Lineberger and UNC Cancer Care collaboration, creativity, and innovation are the rule -- not the exception.

The Spirit of Collaboration:

“When we have scientists and clinicians working together we are able to move forward. We need to know and understand each other’s work.  The center fosters a spirit of collaboration and openness, from the top leadership down.”
Lisa Carey, MD,
The Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research, Associate Director for Clinical Research

“As a translational scientist, I appreciate the collaboration with the School of Public Health for population studies. I also value the ability to treat everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Patients benefit from the collaborative approach from the beginning as nurses are able to guide patients through chemo, radiation and surgery as a part of the effort of coordination of care.”

“There are no scientific boundaries when we are working together.”
“UNC is in logarithmic growth as a cancer center. It is exciting to be here. Not only does the institution excel because of the advances in  molecular biology and health sciences, we study how  to get underserved groups into the system.
Hy Muss, MD,
Professor of Medical Oncology and Director, Geriatric Oncology Program
