STO is governed by a Board of Directors. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is Carmen Allegra, MD, from the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center. Dr. Allegra provides guidance to the staff and committees of the Society.
The CME Program is overseen by the CME Committee. The CME Committee also oversees Section Editors, whose function it is to provide subspecialized expertise on specific cancer types. There are two co-chairs of the CME Committee:
- Frank Balis, MD, Clinical Director of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health
- Charles R. Sherman, PhD, retired Deputy Director of the Office of Medical Applications of Research of the National Institutes of Health
In addition, the clinical content of CME activities and Journal articles, certified by the School of Medicine of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is managed by the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC). Members of the MAC represent some of the leading authorities in oncology worldwide. The MAC develops and implements policies concerning the scientific accuracy and fair balance of all CME activities
. In addition, they oversee the resolution of conflicts of interest, and assure that activities are free of commercial bias.
